Boyle Scouts and Lough Keel Scout Campsite To Feature on RTE

The short documentary filmed by RTE back in early October will hit our screens on Saturday 12th November during the Winning Streak show.
The documentary was made of Boyle Scouts and Lough Keel Scout Campsite and the facilities and activities available to Scouts and visiting groups in the Boyle/Lough Key area.
Scouting Ireland nationally is an ongoing beneficiary of funding from the National Lottery.

The Scouts themselves and the Leaders and Parents whom put in a massive effort behind the scenes to have everything right for the cameras on the day, deserve great credit for their hard work.

Boyle Scouts would like to thank and fully appreciate the great support we received from Louise and Anna of Lough Key Activity Centre, Deirde Cunningham of North West Adventure, Denise and Staff of Zipit Forest Adventure, Pete and Oliver of Pete Walsh Boats and Adrien and Jimmy Neale of Lough Horse Riding Stables and Country Pursuits. Their support and willingness to get involved at short notice was just excellent. They pulled out all the stops for us and meant that on the day, we were able to showcase a huge amount of activities that are readily available around Boyle.

We would also like to sincerely thank Paddy Hennelly of the Communications Team in Scouting Ireland and Joe Doherty, Provincial Support Officer for the Western Province. Paddy travelled up to us from Galway to do the official interview with RTE and Joe joined us from Sligo to make sure everything ran smoothly.

Tuesday Scouts Hike 23rd October

Tuesday Scouts got out for their first hike of the year to Cloontykilla Castle recently. The weather was kind to us for the most part of the day. An easy flat hike to start with, it will hopefully be the first of many taking us into the countryside and mountains over the next 6-8 months.

Monday Cubs - Recent Hike

On Sunday 9 October, our Monday Cubs took part in a hike on the Bricklieves, from the Carrowkeel Tombs in Castlebaldwin to Ballinafad. Whilst the hike was a challenge for everyone, a very enjoyable day was had by the cubs, leaders and parents that took part, despite the damp and windy conditions. A few photos below.

Boyle Scouts Uniforms

Boyle Scouts are asking any household that may have unwanted Scout Uniforms to please donate them back to us.
This will enable us to provide Uniform items to our youth members at a much lesser cost than purchasing new ones while also raising a few euros for Scouting in Boyle. Uniform items such as Neckerchiefs, Woggles, Beaver/Cub Jumpers, Scout shirts, Scout belts or any of the Scouting Ireland trousers will be gratefully accepted.
Items can be dropped into meetings in the Sports Complex at any time on Monday evenings 7.00 - 9.30pm, Tuesdays 7.00 - 9.45pm or Wednesdays 8.30 - 10.00pm. Alternatively you can contact any of the following: Beth 086 8569374, Stephanie 086 8419156 or Angela 086 3560389.

RTE Cameras to visit Boyle Scouts

A few Boyle Scouts pictured below getting their Camping Equipment prepared for Tuesday 4th October, when RTE visit us to make a short documentary on our Camping and Scouting activities.
Boyle Scouts will be be involved on Tuesday next, 4th October with an RTE Camera Crew in making a short documentary on Camping and Scouting Activities in and around the Boyle area. The documentary is being made for the National Lottery to showcase Scouting Ireland as an ongoing beneficiary of National Lottery Funding.
Filming will take place with our Scouts in a number of secret locations on Tuesday afternoon and evening!!!
The outdoor cooking and camping skills of our Scouts, and our excellent Campsite and facilities available at Lough Keel will all feature in front of the cameras.
We also intend to strongly promote the many great activities available in Lough Key and in the Boyle area for visiting Scouts, Guides and all Youth Groups.
Many people may not realise that the tourist attraction that is our Lough Keel Scout Campsite brought almost 3000 camping visitors to the Boyle area throughout 2011 with those visitors between them staying almost 6000 days and nights in the area.

Boyle Scouts Need Your Help

Boyle Scouts is a vibrant youth organisation catering for the youth of Boyle town and surrounding areas. Currently we have 168 Youth Members and 39 Adult Members across 7 Sections, 2 Beaver, 2 Cub, a Scout, Venture and a Rover section.

We have been looking the last few years at the possibility of building an extension to our Scout Den. We hope to link up our Den with the existing Garage and also to provide our own toilets so that the Den can be used at any time for meetings, training or even have visiting Groups stay overnight.

We hope to carry out these works over the summer months in order to have the Den available to us again in September.

We have some money set aside (€14,000) and hope to borrow the rest (€25,000) from Boyle Credit Union.

In order to help repay this loan, we are looking at setting up a Monthly Draw to run for the next few years until the loan is cleared.

The proposed Draw would run as follows:

Members sign up to a Standing Order of €10 per month or an Annual Payment of €120.

Proposed Monthly prizes would be: 1st Prize: €200, 2nd Prize: €100, 3rd Prize: €50, 4th Prize: €50

If you would like to join this fundraising Draw, or to give a one-off donation towards our Building Fund, however large or small, we would greatly appreciate all financial help.

Cheques, Standing Order Payments or Electronic Transfer Contributions can be made payable to the following Account:
Boyle Scouts Building Fund:             Account Number:       42367249
Bank of Ireland, Boyle                     Sort Code:                  90-53-28

                                                      IBAN Number:            IE07 BOFI 9053 2842 3672 49

So far we have had an excellent response from Parents and Boyle Businesses, and would like to thank them all for the support they are showing us.

Tus Maith, County Hike 13th February 2011 (formerly Peak 2000)

Below are a few pics taken on the Tus Maith event on Sunday 13th Febraury. A great turnout, in excess of 250 from around Lough Keel Scout County were in attendance on what was a very well organised event. The weather held good and everyone from Beaver to Leader had an enjoyable day. Much thanks and appreciation to the Carrick Leaders who organised and ran the event and to "Chef Martin" (Longford Leader) who had food and refreshments flowing in abundance for all the hikers as they returned to base.
